Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth, 1948. This is a depiction of Wyeth’s neighbour Christina Olson, who suffered from the paralysing condition polio. Once this factor is known, the piece goes from being a playful image of a runaway imagination, to an image of struggle and almost physical deterioration. There is, however, a sense of hope in the warm colour scheme and eye-opening atmosphere.
