The Death of Marat by Jacques-Louis David, 1793. This famous painting by French neoclassicist painter Jacques-Louis David depicts the murder of Jean-Paul Marat, a theorist, journalist and significant political figure during the French Revolution. He was killed in his bathtub on July 13th 1793 by the radical Charlotte Corday, who was later executed for this action. The note in Marat’s hand, given to him by Corday, loosely translates as ‘My great unhappiness gives me a right to your kindness.’ (She this is a deceitful way of gaining entrance into Marat’s presence.)
