Indian Widow by Joseph Wright of Derby, 1785. I love the way the bright burst of sunlight created by the billowing storm clouds frames and silhouettes the Indian widow in this piece by English landscape painter Joseph Wright of Derby. Concepts of the ‘noble savage’, native peoples and primitivism were rising interests in Europe during this period.
