The White Ballet by Everett Shinn, 1904

It is undoubtedly clear why Shinn is often referred to as the ‘American Degas’. You can see how he was inspired by Degas’ illuminating theatre scenes, though Shinn’s brushstroke technique is slightly less impressionistic to create a style that presents detail as well as movement.
