Francis Bacon, 1969, Self Portrait

There is something really intriguing about this self portrait by British artist Francis Bacon. Despite its grotesque distortion, causing the face to take on a mask-like facade, the style reminds me of the caricaturist technique of accentuation: Bacon has emphasised the roundness of his facial contours, thus in turn stressing highlights and shadows, and created a disturbing and intimidating image in the process.
