The Student, 1903-04
Gwen John (1876-1939) was a Welsh artist, who worked primarily during the Edwardian era. When she was 27, John met the 63-year-old French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The two artists fell into a highly passionate affair, of which you can read more about in this article from The Telegraph.
We looked at John’s two self-portraits in a module from third year, in terms of how her appearance, particularly her clothes and pose, epitomises the birth of the self-assured ‘new woman’.
